How to Apply Mascara (the Right Way!)

There are some makeup techniques that seem near impossible to perfect. Mascara application probably isn’t one of them. But believe it or not, there are a few fine points that you may be missing with each swipe of your mascara. Allow us to explain with a quick tutorial. Without further ado, here’s how to apply mascara the right way.

How to Apply Mascara (the Right Way!)

Supplies

Eyelash curler (we’re big fans of Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler)
Mascara (we used L’Oréal Voluminous Extra-Volume Collagen Mascara)

Instructions

1. Always curl your lashes. This is the most important step because it really changes the way your lashes look—with mascara and without. (Quick Tip: Run your eyelash curler under hot water or blast with the blow dryer for a few seconds to heat it up. This will help hold the curl. Just be sure to test the temperature on your hand before you hold the curler up to your eye.)
2. Apply mascara to your bottom lashes first. If you’ve ever ended up with mascara dotted on your eyelid, you know the importance of the bottom first technique. Brush the wand down your eyelashes, being careful not to touch the brush to your eye.
3. Now for the top eyelashes. Start as close to lash line as possible, and looking down, place the brush against your lashes. Give it a quarter turn so the brush can really grab the lashes and coat them completely. Then wiggle the wand back and forth up the length of your eyelashes.
4. Repeat. Allow the mascara to dry between each coat.

Expert Tip:

For lush lashes, LA-based Makeup Artist Elle Leary likes to use a lengthening formula first and then a volumizing mascara for the second coat.

Time Saving Beauty Products for Busy Moms! #makeup #beauty #makeuptips #beautytips

Time Saving Beauty Products for Busy Moms! #makeup #beauty #makeuptips #beautytips

I am always on the lookout for time saving beauty products and I feel like busy mama’s would have the low down since they’re always on the run and sometimes have to throw themselves together in under five minutes! I’m not a mom yet so I reached out to some of my favorite mama’s & bloggers to bring you their quick tips on what works for them! Maybe you can find something in here that could cut your routine in half? Now wouldn’t that be fab!

“Concealer and color correcting creams are your best friends, new moms don’t sleep much and concealer helps cover dark circles and color correcting will immediately even out the most tired of skins.” – Norah Loves Makeup

“Having a 3 year old means putting on a face in 10 minutes or less! Tinted moisturizer, concealer (I recommend IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Undereye) mascara, brows, blush and a long lasting lip gloss and I’m good to go!” – Love For Lacquer

“My 5 minute mom look, the I have to go pick up my daughter from school, run to the grocery store, etc look is tinted moisturizer, sometimes not even that sometimes just concealer, mascara, a little bit of blush on the cheeks and a little lip gloss” – This Girl’s Life

“When my daugthers were younger they were late for everything. The slowest children you have ever met. Anywho, I would throw on liner, mascara, and a touch of concealer under my eyes. I never worried about lips before leaving the house b/c I always kept a couple of glosses in the car…never lipstick b/c I didn’t want the to melt.” – Grow It Girl

A Nude Lip Pencil — a shade darker than your natural lip color. Your Favorite Lipstick/Gloss STEPS: Look in the mirror to detect where your natural lip line

A Nude Lip Pencil — a shade darker than your natural lip color. Your Favorite Lipstick/Gloss STEPS: Look in the mirror to detect where your natural lip line

I confess. I’m a total cheater. And there’s nothing wrong with the natural shape of our lips! It’s just some of us have uneven lips or could benefit from a little volume every now and then. (Remember The 3-D Lip Illusion and The Fuller Lip Effect from my Beautician Magician Series?) I’m not suggesting you wear this technique to the grocery store, class or the gym. But grab a lip liner and play with your lip shape next time you feel like getting made up and you might really like it. You can cheat a proper cupid’s bow, correct an uneven smile or just draw outside the lines to make them look a little bigger. Here’s how:

TOOLS:

A Nude Lip Pencil — Find one that is just a shade darker than your natural lip color. I love Edward Bess Defining Lip Liner because it’s a perfect universal nude color that looks gorgeous on all my clients and won’t feather.
Your Favorite Lipstick/Gloss — Right now I’m obsessed with Armani Lip Maestro because it gives an amazing velvety matte finish while staining your lips. I used shade 500/Blush on Mahala above.
STEPS:

Look in the mirror to detect where your natural lip line (perimeter) is. Starting at the cupid’s bow, place the pencil directly above it so it’s still touching it and exaggerate the arch by drawing just above it.
Continue outlining the entire lip area, basically tracing where your natural highlight would have been. Then fill in the entire lip.
Follow with any lip color (I chose a similar shade to the lip pencil but you can follow a nude pencil with any shade, or match your lip pencil with your lipstick/gloss) all over.

4. Fill in the outline. Ta-dah perfect classic winged liner.

Beauty Bets | Tips for Getting the Perfect Brows

Beauty Bets | Tips for Getting the Perfect Brows

Your brows can make or break your look. No matter how perfect your hair and makeup is, if you haven’t groomed your brows, you’ll notice that something will seem a bit off about your look and sometimes you won’t even be able to tell what it is! Many women take grooming, shaping and maintaining their brows for granted. This could be because the whole process takes up quite a bit of time. It could also be because most women are afraid of touching their brows and doing anything to it because they don’t really know how to go about it. Though you can always have your brows done by a pro, regular brow sessions can get pretty expensive.

Genius! Eye Makeup Tricks - must know! Beauty Bets

Aaaahh eye makeup!  It is indeed the most time consuming and fiddly part of makeup application. Over the years, working playing with makeup, I’ve also adopted some simple techniques that can save a lot of time – especially on those days where you want to look presentable but don’t quite have the time to spend on application.

So here are some of my favourite tricks which will not only save you time but also make you a mini makeup artist in your own right ;)

Genius! Eye Makeup Tricks - must know! Beauty Bets

LINE & CURL

I’m definitely an advocate for curling the lashes.  It’s amazing what a difference they make to your overall look.  It’s this love of curled lashes that also helped me master this “2 for 1″ technique of lining the eyes as you curl them. It creates a soft, smudged-in look which is great for daytime.

You need: a pair of lash curlers and a soft eye pencil – just your regular eye pencil will be fine, as long as it’s easy to apply.

With your eye pencil, draw a thin line right along the edge of your lash curler; you can make the line as thin or thick as you like.

Make sure you get as close to your lashline as possible and press the base of the curler against your skin.  Squeeze and release the handle a few times to make sure the eyeliner smudges well into your lashline, and to help your lashes curl.

Voila! you not only curled your lashes but also lined them! It’s that easy!

The way your lash curler sits against your eyes is the most important thing; so if you miss any bits, just smudge and fill in the color with your brush.  I’ve always used either Kevyn Aucoin lash curler here or the Shu Uemura lash curler (available at select department stores) as both have the perfect curve to fit over most eye shapes

THICKEN YOUR LASHES

If you love thick voluminous lashes but don’t have the time to build up a million layers of mascara, or bother with false lashes, this trick is for you!  It’s the powder technique, which helps you achieve thickness in the lashes with just 2 coats of mascara – but the result is about as equivalent to 3-4 coats.

You need: your regular mascara and loose face powder (preferably mineral powder as they are finely milled and won’t clump up)

Make Your Lipstick Last Step-by-step

The secret to setting your lipstick isn't really a secret. It's a combination of prep, application, and product choices. Check out these tips for a long-lasting lip.

Make Your Lipstick Last Step-by-step

Steps by Steps :

1. To ensure your lipstick lasts, you'll want to ensure there are no flakes of dead skin renting out space on your pout. Use a lip scrub like e.l.f. Lip Exfoliator or Bliss Fabulips to exfoliate those little dudes away.

2. Next, apply a hydrating, non-oily lip balm. Anything with a waxy consistency is preferred over a slippery texture that will cause color to slide right off. I love Sephora's Super Nourishing Lip Balm.

3. Pat a little foundation or concealer over lips. Don't entirely erase your mouth, but cancel out your lip's natural pink so that your lip color's true hue comes through. This also gives it a little something extra to adhere to. If you have a dark skin tone, this also helps enhance the lipstick's true color.

4. If you're wearing a bold lip color, outlining the outer edge of your lip line with concealer or the NYX Wonder Pencil will create a barrier to prevent bleeding. It's basically like installing a fence for your lipstick! Outline and tap softly with your finger to blend.

5. Now, take a lip liner and outline the lips, as well as fill them in. The lip pencil is drier than lipstick and serves as a layer of color for the lipstick to grab onto. I am using NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Rose.

6. Begin applying your color selectively, instead of just swiping across the whole lip. This makes for even, controlled application. I am using the Bite Beauty High Pigment Lip Pencil in Quince. I've had particularly good luck with this product's staying power and the pigmentation is just beautiful.

7. Fill in the rest of your lips.

8. Take a tissue and separate it into two halves. Place one sheet on your lips and dust a translucent powder like Make Up For Ever HD Powder over the lips, through the tissue. This is a trick you'll see makeup artists doing backstage at fashion shows. Now you won't worry that it's some model torture treatment. This sets the color, without depositing a layer of powder.

9. Lightly apply a bit more lipstick on top. Now smile. Your lip color is ready to go the distance!

Did you know?

There is no such thing as a lipgloss that lasts all day. If you want a glossy look, you will have to reapply throughout the day. Or place a dab in the center of the lip and not all over.
Matte formulas will last longer but can be drying, so don't skip the prep!
Using lip liner will always make your color last longer. Make sure you fill in the lip entirely!
Use a lip brush for a more precise application.

Homemade natural foundation powder that's healthy for your skin. No chemicals.

The moment any foreign substance comes in contact with my skin, it attacks! Leaving behind some serious battle scars.  In my late teen years I began to battle break outs here and there. I believe this was largely due to my poor diet and the amount of chemical-ridden “beauty” products I used. My face would always react poorly and I would turn to more chemicals which promised to help “beautify” my skin.

Homemade natural foundation powder that's healthy for your skin. No chemicals.

I scoured the aisles in stores and was greatly disappointed to find all the “natural” products (Aveeno, Burt’s Bees, even Arbonne) were far from real ingredients. Since the skin absorbs anything that is placed on it within a mere 26 seconds, I wanted my products to contain ingredients I would feel safe floating around in my bloodstream. I wanted products made from ingredients I could eat.

I finally found what I was looking for. I use a local line of products which contain food-grade organic ingredients for soap, lip balm, and toothpaste. I purchase Primal Pit Paste for deodorant.  Even after searching and searching I couldn’t find make-up products which suited my new requirements. Why not make my own?

From the how-tos, this twisted bun style seems incredibly simple.

We’re so glad that talented creatives share their work with us on a regular basis, and we’re thrilled to share this simple DIY Twisted Bun tutorial from Irrelephant today! This elegant and sweet hairstyle would look absolutely darling on any bride, and we’d be interested to hear if you would wear something like this for your wedding day. Comment below and let us know!

From the how-tos, this twisted bun style seems incredibly simple.

Blogger : Beauty Bets
Photo : Source

Instructions for the Twisted Bun:

1. Start with making sure the hair is prepped and textured, you can also tease and spray. Split your hair into two sections.

2. Tie the two sections into a knot. (like the first step in tying your shoes)

3. On the last photo, see how the left section is directed to the right and down? Pin about 3 bobby pins to secure it, especially towards the ends. Then take the right section and twist and direct it up and to the left. Pin that down. Take a few more bobby pins and start pinning around the bun to secure a little extra. Spray and pull some whispy’s around the face!
This a really really easy and wont take too much of your time. This is ideal for that 2nd or 3rd day and when you’re hair has that dirty grit and is moldable. Also- don’t forget to tease the crown to have a good shape on your do!

Full, Lush Lashes | How do you amp up your lashes to get major drama?

Full, never-ending, skyscraping…all words we’d like to describe our lashes (and our beauty budgets, but that’s another story). Unfortunately, not all of us were blessed with lashes that live up to that description – that’s what falsies were invented for, after all. But no matter how much we love a fluttery false fringe, they’re usually reserved for special occasions. Lucky for us, YouTube beauty guru Charis is here to show us achieve full, lush lashes without falsies – all you need is mascara, an eyelash curler and loose powder. Morning beauties! Here is yesterday's look I wanted to create a more wearable Bridal Smokey eye look. Here is what I came up with I hope you like it!

How To Get a Bronze Summer Smoky Eye - Step By Step Metallic Smoky Eye - Beauty Bets

How To Get a Bronze Summer Smoky Eye - Step By Step Metallic Smoky Eye - Beauty Bets
Blogger : Beauty Bets
Photo : Source

Step 1 and 2. Bronze shadow works for every eye color. Press a medium bronze shadow from lash line to crease and softly blend the edges. Then, apply the same color underneath the lash line in a thick swipe.

Step 3 and 4. Eyeshadows stay longer when applied with a damp brush. Dampen an eyeliner brush to apply a brown shadow liner and blend upward. Then, use the same brown shadow underneath the lash line in a thin swipe.

Step 5 and 6. Make your eyes pop. Darken the lash line more with a black shadow liner and blend upward using the same damp brush. Be sure to do the same on the underneath lash line.

Step 7. Lightly add a shimmery shadow. Dab a copper shadow, a few shades lighter than the bronze one, across the lid to soften the look and add dimension.

Step 8. Very lightly trace your eye and blend in matte shadow. Outline the existing shadow with a matte brown one starting from the inner corner going all the way around the entire eye. This creates more depth and really plays up the smokiness of the look.

Step 9. Highlight the inner corner of your eye. Apply Make Up For Ever 7K Metal Gold Kohl Pencil ($17; makeupforever.com) just inside the matte brown shadow on the inner corner of the eye for contrast.

Step 10. Apply two coats of your favorite black mascara.
