Everyday Drugstore Makeup for Beginners (Tutorial)

I have a different type of video for you guys today, although it’s something I feel pretty passionate about: cheap, everyday makeup! A lot of my friends and readers tell me they have no idea where to start when it comes to makeup. What to buy, how to apply it, and what they really need.

I sat down and filmed this video to not only show you an everyday drugstore makeup for beginners tutorial, but I am using minimal brushes and tools in this look! Furthermore, I talk about how to start building your drugstore beauty wardrobe. I might also add that you should take a look at my post, The Best Cheap Makeup, to get even more awesome drugstore suggestions. This post has been pinned over 220,000 times and many have told me that they reference it while shopping for their drugstore makeup!

10 Simple Homemade Tips To Get Rid of Chapped Lips

Do you have the habit of licking your lips every time? Then there is a great possibility that you might be suffering from dry and chapped lips. Chalky and dry lips are not just restricted to winters and can happen during any season.

1. Honey and Vaseline:

We know that honey has amazing anti-bacterial properties and is one of the nature’s best healing agents. Vaseline or petroleum jelly is widely used to soften, nourish and protect skin from drying. By combining these two ingredients, we get a delicious and effective option of all the for chapped lips home remedies.

Apply a generous amount of pure honey all over the lips.

Then coat the lips with Vaseline and leave it for 10-15 minutes. This will let your lips absorb the honey and thus soften it. The Vaseline coating will provide additional hydration and prevent the honey from drying.

Remove the honey and Vaseline using a damp cotton cloth.

Repeat this procedure for a week for visible results.

2. Cucumber:

This cool vegetable becomes your best friend during summers, so utilise it to treat your dry and chapped lips. Cucumber also has skin lightening properties and helps remove tan. So it lightens your lips by reducing the dark patches on them.

Slice a cucumber and rub them gently on the lips.

Keep for 15 minutes and wash off with plain water. This would also make your lips soft and supple.

3. Rose Petals:

Rose petals have skin lightening properties and also make your lips hydrated. It helps to keep them pink and smooth, by retaining the natural colour.

Soak the rose petals in raw milk for a few hours.

Mash them into a smooth paste and apply on the lips.

Keep for 15-20 minutes and wash off with cool water.

4. Lip Scrub:

Scrub your lips gently to exfoliate them and to get rid of dead cells. This reveals natural colour of your lips and also makes them soft and supple. The sugar scrub is a natural exfoliater and is suitable for tender lips.

In 2 teaspoons of brown sugar, mix a few drops of olive oil.

Then add ½ teaspoon of honey and mix well. Leave this mixture for 5 minutes, so that the sugar becomes softer and thus making it easier to apply.

Apply all over the lips and scrub gently. Wash off with lukewarm water.

5.  Lemon Ointment:

Lemon and sugar are effective treatments for dark and chapped lips. Lemon acts as a natural bleach and honey protects the lips form harmful effects of the free radicals.

Mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and honey. In it add ½ teaspoon of the castor oil and mix well.

Apply onto the lips before going to bed daily.

Repeat the procedure for 10 days for best results.

6. Aloe Vera:

Aloe contains natural ingredients and amazing healing powers for chapped lips. It strengthens the thin protective oil layer on the lips and heals the dry and chapped lips.

Apply aloe vera gel on the lips before going to bed regularly, for cooling and soothing effect.

7. Olive oil:

Olive oil is the best natural moisturiser and lubricant. The fatty acids in olive oil help cure dry and chapped lips, making them soft and supple. Apply olive twice a day for best results.

8. Flax Seed Oil:

The fatty acids in flax seed oil have nourishing properties. They penetrate into the lip tissues, making then soft and smooth. For instant smoothening, apply flax seed oil directly onto the chapped lips.

9. Oils:

Both castor oil and coconut are high in essential fatty acids, which help in curing chapped lips. Apply twice a day for immediate effect.

10. Water:

Water is the most essential part of our beauty regime. It helps to keep our body well hydrated. And lack of water results in dry and chapped lips. Therefore one should drink at least 10-12 glasses of water daily, for healthy body and smooth lips.

How To Use Concealer As A Foundation?

Foundation and Concealer are essential items of any woman’s makeup trousseau. Foundation helps to smooth out the skin tone, hide minor spots and give the face a bright uplift, whereas a concealer is specially designed to take care of the under eye areas to cover dark circles, or spots which the foundation cannot cover fully. Both have different purposes and hence differ in formulation and coverage.

HOW TO CONTOUR AND HIGHLIGHT

Once again, we’re delighted to share a basic makeup tutorial from Los Angeles based makeup artist, Amy Clarke. She has created this lovely tutorial along with one of our favorite photographers, Bryce Covey, to detail and demonstrate how to perfect the art of contouring and highlighting using makeup.

Take these tips from Amy to add to your ever-growing arsenal of makeup techniques. We know how difficult it is to get straight information when you’re looking through hundreds of turorials on how to perfect a makeup skill (to use bronzer or not to use bronzer?!) but as always, Amy has made it easier than ever for you to learn how to use your natural bone structure and just a few key pieces of makeup to contour and highlight your best features. Use this basic makeup tip to kick your daily beauty routine up a notch!

Contour & Highlight:

1.+ 2.  Apply one layer of foundation or tinted moisturizer all over face. I used Tarte’s BB Cream in “Medium Light”. Using a foundation brush and a cream concealer (2 to 3 times lighter than your skin tone), apply concealer (the highlight) to the under eyes, down the sides of the nose, and brushed back and upward toward the hairline.

3. Using the same concealer, highlight the center of the forehead and down the bridge of the nose, upper lip, center of the chin and on your brow bone. Lastly, apply the concealer to the jawline, just under your cheekbones.

4. Once you’ve finished with all the highlighting, it’s time to apply the contour. Pick a cool-toned cream concealer or foundation thats 2 to 3 shades darker than your skin tone. Taking a smaller, stiff brush or foundation brush, apply the contour cream to the hallows of your cheeks, just below your cheekbone, all the way to your hairline.

5.+ 6. +7. Apply the same color to your forehead near your hairline, temples, jawline, the sides of your neck and to the sides of your nose.

8. Using a wet Beauty Blender or Duo Fiber Blending Brush, blend all the contour and highlighter together until there is no more distinction between the two colors.

9. Lastly, Apply a light dusting of blush, and set all the highlight with a loose powder using a small natural bristled brush. I used Tarte’s 12 Hour Amazonian Clay Blush in “Tipsy” and Make Up For Ever’s Super Matte Loose Powder in “Translucent Natural”.

Pro Tip: You can use cream or powders to contour or highlight, creams are easier to blend and tend to look more natural. Avoid using bronzer to contour. You are creating a “shadow” so think of a color that’s similar to an actual shadow, which tends to be a cooler tone.  Use Bronzer to warm up your skin and make it look sun-kissed!

8 ways to make a pimple disappear quickly

It’s the Murphy’s law of skincare: As soon as you have somewhere to go, there will be a pimple ready to strike. But beating the blemish isn’t unattainable, and there are ways to do it quickly. (Squeezing not included.)

We asked dermatologists to recommend the best way to make those blemishes disappear in the nick of time. 

Attack It

Shrink a flare-up with a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment to kill bacteria quickly at the source, says dermatologist Dr. Michael Lin.  

Grab a Shot

Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe says if you are in a rush, visit your derm for an emergency appointment. “In a pinch we can inject a cortisone shot directly into the pimple and it flattens over hours. I do it all the time before weddings and proms.” 

Or Go DIY

If you can’t make it into see anyone, Bowe also says you can also apply a drop of over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. “It will calm the redness and flatten the pimple,” she says. “Just don’t do it too often or it can thin the skin.” 

Go Really DIY

You’ve probably been tempted once or twice to crush up an aspirin over your blemish or apply toothpaste to it. These can work in a pinch but are ultra-drying to your skin and can leave burn marks, Dr. Bowe says. 

Alternatively, Dr. Lin suggests you apply honey to a breakout to calm the redness. “It’s a naturally soothing ingredient with anti-inflammatory properties that help to heal the skin,” he says. “Leave for 5 to 10 minutes, and then wipe away with a damp cloth.”

Treat Overnight

Like a spot treatment, anything containing benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or a retinoid can help to fade the blemish faster — either in prescription strength or over the counter. Bowe suggests that if your blemish hasn’t faded after a day, use one of these ingredients to help it along. “If you are using benzoyl peroxide or a retinoid, though, follow it up with an extra moisturizer so you don’t end up with a dry, scaly spot.” 

Don’t Squeeze!

The experts agree on one thing: Squeezing just creates more problems. “It pushes inflammation deep into the skin, which triggers scar formation and stretches out pores,” Dr. Bowe says.  

Leave it Alone

Sometimes the more you try and attack a pimple, the more agitated it becomes. “I tell my patients to try to prevent acne, rather than chasing a pimple once they feel it forming,” Dr. Bowe says. “If you wait until you break out and then just spot treat by applying tons of acne medicines just on the pimple, you end up with dry spots and never get ahead. It’s so much more effective to use a gentle acne regimen every day to prevent the spots in the first place.” 

She says you have to find the magic balance between using just enough to prevent breakouts, but not too much that you end up dry and flaky.

Reduce your Shinny Face : Using a clean makeup brush, brush your face with pure lemon juice. Let it stand for 5 minutes then rinse. Do this in the evening before bed since the citric acid may cause temporary redness. Lemon juice contains astringent and antiseptic properties that will get rid of the excess perspiration.

Another shine Stopper tip : In a cup, combine 10 drops of lemon juice with one half cup of water. Saturate a cotton ball with mixture and dab over clean skin. Do not rinse.

How-To: Grungy Smokey Eye using Naked 1 + 2

Grungy Smokey Eye using Naked 1 + 2 How-To:

Prime the lids and allow a few seconds for the primer to set.

Using a soft fluffy brush and Naked eyeshadow (Naked Palette), apply the color to the entire eye socket area and blend it well. You want to end up with a dim wash of color surrounding the eye.

Using a more precise contour brush, re-emphasize the socket using Buck eyeshadow (Naked). Keep this color closer to the crease and lash line.

Line the top and bottom lash lines with a smudgy black liner (Zero).

Apply a shimmery brown sticky base (NYX -- French Fries) to your lid and bottom lash line, on top of the black liner, and blend it out with your finger or a synthetic brush.

Using a flat shader brush, pat on Snakebite eyeshadow (Naked 2) on top of the sticky base.

With the same brush, apply Darkhorse (Naked) to the outer third of the lid. 

Clean the brush and apply Suspect (Naked 2) to the inner third of the lid and the inner corner.

Blend out the harsh edges using Buck and Naked. Next, apply Foxy (Naked 2) to the brow bone.

Line the waterline using Whiskey. Add mascara and false lashes.

Extra tips

If you'll notice, I skipped liner in this look. To maximize your lid space, I like to go liner-free. It's certainly not a necessity, especially if you enhance your lashes with mascara and false lashes. One of the ways I see eyes appear small is with overexcessive liner.

When in doubt, choose lighter shadow colors for a more open feel.

Eyedrops can work wonders if you have allergies or persistent redness. When the whites of your eyes are bright, your skin appears more tan too!
